Sensitization Workshop for Prison Health Officers on Health in Detention.
The Kenya Prisons Service (KPS) continues to strengthen its capacity to deliver quality healthcare to persons deprived of liberty through sustained partnerships with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS). These collaborations have played a key role in enhancing health infrastructure, building staff capacity, restoring family links, and improving healthcare documentation within prison facilities.
Today, the Commissioner General of Prisons, Mr. Patrick Aranduh, CBS, officially opened the fifth and final sensitization workshop for Prison Health Officers at the Prisons Staff Training College. He commended both ICRC and KRCS for their continued support, noting that the partnership has provided a valuable platform for medical personnel to share best practices and strengthen both physical and mental healthcare for staff and inmates.
Mr. Aranduh emphasized that the initiative has significantly contributed to improving service readiness and fostering a more responsive and resilient prison health system.
Speaking during the event, Mariko Mavko expressed appreciation for the Kenya Prisons Service’s commitment and readiness to sustain the program, underscoring the importance of continued collaboration in advancing health standards in places of detention.
Senior officers present included the Commandant, Prisons Staff Training College, Angus Masoro, MBS, ndc(K); Director of Rehabilitation and Welfare, Priscilla Majere, MBS, ndc(K); Director of Medical Services, Dr. Wanganga; and the Medical Superintendent in Charge, among others.
The workshop marks a significant milestone in KPS’s ongoing efforts to uphold the dignity, health, and well-being of all persons in custody while aligning with international standards on health in detention.
